The European Commission is taking the UK Government to the European Court of Justice over failure to implement EWTD, according to reports today. The breaches relate to rest breaks and undeclared hours.

This follows a challenge by the union Amicus against the DTI. The case could have wide-ranging implications for the practice and interpretation of EWTD.

Message boards forum
The discussion boards are back up (in a more manageable format!) There's a link in the side column. Post on the message boards with any questions or to share information about New Deal, EWTD etc.

News on the House of Lords Inquiry
The BMJ carries an article on the BMA's evidence to the inquiry, while the HSJ also updates on the NHS Confederation's evidence to the inquiry on Wednesday. We've mentioned the BMA evidence here before; the NHS Confederation stated that they were supportive of the EWTD but felt it needed flexible application. Alastair Henderson raised concerns over SiMAP and Jaeger and stated that on call time needed to be treated differently from normal working time.

Another new page and a great EWTD summary
I've added a section on overnight and shift working - at the moment it's just got a few links but hopefully we can build up some resources. Does anyone have any proactive strategies for supporting staff who are working night shifts? Please send any information to me at admin@idwl.info.

In the news - Your People Manager has a very clear EWTD summary covering what's happening with EWTD in general. Also published in Business Europe. I wish they could come and write all my emails.

USA
Does this look familiar? A great article in the American Medical News looks at how hours reductions are working in the US.

UK
ICWales has a brief article on potential extended roles for nurses at Swansea NHS Trust.
