Lots more news
So! How should banding pay protection be applied? The poll results are in, and it's a tie between "When/if doctors can prove entitlement" and "Pay protection should be abolished" (with a late challenge from "Only for doctors currently in post"). Well, well. Nobody's that keen on no-questions-asked pay protection, then...
Still, there is a question mark over whether New Deal pay structures are adequate to deal with the WTD challenge - we'll have to wait and see if any changes are made.
New poll: Should doctors and/or nurses be able to sleep on full shifts?
Resource of the week: The Changing Workforce Programme has a great set of resources online, with lots of information on role redesign and a roles database (though I'm not entirely keen on their cover design.) A very good site particularly for anyone involved with developing new roles.

The National Sleep Foundation reports that a senior reactor operator in a nuclear plant fell asleep while on a 1900-0700 night shift. The operator "dozed off somewhere between 4 and 5 a.m" - the typical trough period identified for night shift workers is around 3 a.m.

So "pay protection should be abolished" is joint favourite option in the poll, eh?!
Hmm. I have a sneaking suspicion that the same one or two people keep visiting this site and voting for it repeatedly.

Some useful links
A free audit and analysis tool for Hospital at Night is available on the H@N website.
On the "Legislation" page of this website, I've added a summary of the proposed EWTD changes and what they would mean for the NHS. (Comments/criticisms welcome!)

News updates
BMJ careers has some negative feedback on Hospital at Night - and a response from Simon Eccles ("There is no conspiracy"). A medical workforce manager also argues that it's the New Deal that forces doctors onto shifts, not the EWTD.

The Sunday Herald reports that locum consultants are costing NHS Scotland £11ma year.

Lower hours, fewer medical errors - more evidence
A landmark new study in the US has shown that reducing junior doctor hours significantly reduces medical errors. The study limited ICU shifts to 16 hours or less and doctors worked 80 hours or less per week, during the test period. The doctors slept more and had considerably less "attentional failures" overnight. The National Sleep Foundation has a good summary of this research.
