European talks on SiMAP/Jaeger collapse again
European Union talks on the WTD collapsed again on 1st June 2006 despite general agreement on SiMAP/Jaeger. This was, again, due to the vexed question of the UK opt-out - several member states, led by France and Sweden, called for the opt-out clause to be phased out over a seven year period. This was unacceptable to the UK government, who state that the opt-out is essential to flexibility and that a growing number of European countries are using it. Talks have been put on hold until Finland assumes the EU presidency in July.
